Kipande House, completed in 1913 and once Nairobi’s tallest building, remains one of the city’s most iconic heritage landmarks. Originally serving as a colonial registration center, it was later transformed into a modern banking facility with an expanded hall, ATM lobby, and staff offices—all while remaining operational. The project showcased how structural engineering can modernize heritage buildings.
Our Approach to Adaptive Reuse Engineering At Recon, we approach adaptive reuse with engineering precision. The process begins with due diligence — assessing material integrity, foundation stability, and the performance of existing load-bearing systems. We analyze original masonry, steel, and timber to determine capacity and upgrade floor live load and lateral force-resisting systems in ways that minimize impact on the original architecture. Modern MEP systems are discreetly integrated, and energy-efficient measures incorporated. Through phased planning and collaboration, we deliver structures that meet today’s performance standards
