Adding extra floors in Kenya increases property value and usable space. A study by Nationwide Building Society found that extensions or loft conversions can raise a property’s value by up to 25%. However, vertical expansion requires a structural assessment to ensure safety.
Structural Assessment and Load Capacity A structural engineer must evaluates if the existing structure can support extra floors:
Foundation Strength: Can it carry added load, or is reinforcement needed?
Column & Beam Capacity: Are members adequate, or do they require jacketing/reinforcement?
Material Integrity: Check concrete, steel, and masonry for cracks or corrosion.
Load Distribution: Ensures uniform stress and prevents overstressing.
Without proper assessment, additions can cause cracking, deflection, or failure. Planning should include building permits, regulatory compliance, budgeting for contingencies, temporary relocation or phased construction, and integration of new floorsstructurally and architecturally.
At Recon, we value professionalism and thorough structural assessment for safe, durable, and high-value floor additions.
